Burning Ten

2001

The works of ten well-known Moscow artists (Oleg Kulik, V. Dubosarsky/A. Vinogradov, V. Koshlyakov, K. Zvezdochetov, N. Turnov and others) were burnt in protest against the war in Chechnya. The works were mounted on posts resembling gallows with signs bearing their title and artist’s name.

My work “The Face of Power” had been painted on plywood treated with a flame retardant (something I had not been aware of). It was the only work that did not catch on fire. In the darkness of the night, one could see the omnipresent gaze of the police officer (“The Face of Power”) above the glow of the auto-da-fé.
